Role: Under Gardener
Reports to: Head Gardener and Employer
Location: Hungerford/Marlborough
Hours: Part Time or Full Time – depending on availability
Salary: Dependent on experience

About the Role
We are looking for a reliable and enthusiastic Under Gardener who is keen to expand their knowledge and work alongside The Head Gardener on a small private estate near the North Wiltshire/Berkshire border.


This is an ideal position for someone who enjoys working outdoors and is looking to gain experience of practical gardening and garden maintenance under the guidance of an experienced gardener.


The role focuses on helping with the management and upkeep of substantial historic formal gardens including orchard, peony walk, perennial beds, greenhouse, vegetable gardens and grounds care. There will also be a requirement to assist with the smooth running of the wider grounds, including nature reserve meadows, and to help with river management.


The role will enable the successful applicant to develop hands-on skills, build plant knowledge, and gain confidence using tools and gardening techniques in a supportive environment.


Key Responsibilities
• Assist the Head Gardener with general garden maintenance
• Assisting with planting, pruning, weeding, watering, and lawn care
• Prepare flower beds, borders, and planting areas
• Support seasonal gardening tasks and outdoor projects
• Use and care for gardening tools and equipment safely
• Help keep workspaces, sheds, and equipment clean and organised
• Assist with lifting, moving materials, and outdoor manual tasks
• Observe and learn about plant care, garden health, and maintenance routines
• Assist wider Estate Team when required

• Reliable, punctual, and able to work as part of a team
• Comfortable working outdoors in different weather conditions
• Physically able to carry out manual gardening tasks


Desirable but Not Essential
• Previous gardening or outdoor work experience
• Basic knowledge of plants or garden tools
• Driving licence
