You will work towards qualifying as Officer In Charge for electric fishing surveys and will be involved in boat work, so experience of fieldwork and biosecurity good practice is essential. You will be using a scheduling tool and utilising this technology to enhance delivery. You will maintain, interpret and input into monitoring systems. You'll lead on the ordering of sampling equipment and maintaining the bottle & fishery stores. You will be an effective communicator, liaising with site contacts, members of the public and internal customers. You will train and mentor other team members to ensure consistent delivery to a high standard.
The field work can be physically demanding and you will be required to sample in all weathers. You’ll be working alone for the majority of the time, so you’ll need to prioritise your Health, Safety and wellbeing, be self-motivated and organised.
There will also be opportunity to support the Environment Agency’s Incident response.
The Thames Valley Team is dispersed, and this post will be focused on Hertfordshire & London and the surrounding areas. You will be expected to cross boundaries to support other teams. This is a field-based role and requires long, extensive driving in urban and rural locations.
A full UK driving licence is essential for this role.
Field sample collection experience

You will be provided with a badged vehicle. The base location for this role is Alchemy, Welwyn Garden City, where you will drop off samples most days. The majority of the time you will be outside collecting data from locations across the team territory.
