Are you looking to build hands-on experience working on rivers and wetlands this summer?
FiveRivers is looking for a motivated Assistant Aquatic Ecologist to join our Water & Environment Monitoring team for the 2026 field season. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone early in their career to gain practical experience in freshwater ecology, environmental monitoring and river surveys across the south of England.
You’ll work alongside experienced ecologists carrying out:
Fish and river habitat surveys
Water quality monitoring
Invertebrate sampling
Flow gauging and telemetry visits
Field data collection and recording
Most days will be spent outdoors on rivers and streams, so you’ll need to enjoy practical fieldwork and working in all weather conditions.
We’re looking for someone who:
Is studying towards, or holds, a relevant land-based or environmental qualification (BTEC, Diploma, T Level or equivalent)
Is enthusiastic, reliable and keen to learn
Is comfortable working outdoors in challenging conditions
Holds a full UK driving licence
Can travel and stay away from home during the working week when required
No previous professional experience is required — training and support will be provided throughout the season.
This role would suit students or recent college leavers from agriculture, countryside management, fisheries, environmental science or related courses.
